John Armitt was appointed Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority 1st September 2007. John was previously Chief Executive of Network Rail from 4 October 2002 and Chief Executive of Railtrack PLC from 14 December 2001. He has extensive experience in the building, civil engineering and industrial construction markets, having joined John Laing in 1966 as a civil engineer.
Mr Armitt is also Chairman of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and was appointed to this position on 1st April 2007
Mr Armitt has also held positions as Chief Executive of Costain Group plc, 1997 – 2001, Union Railways, 1993 – 1997 and Chairman (International and Civil Engineering Divisions) for John Laing plc, 1987 – 1993
He was awarded the CBE in 1996 for his contribution to the rail industry. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
