Tony Butcher

Principal Consultant, BRE

 Tony Butcher has over 40 years experience of practical geotechnical research projects at BRE including:

● In situ and laboratory testing for engineering properties of soils, soft rocks and treated ground;
● Plate loading tests on stiff clays and soft rocks in deep shafts and shallow excavations and analysis of results,
● Development and proving of state of the art CPT and purpose built large scale in situ testing devices.
● The measurements of seismic wave velocities and their use for engineering properties of soils.
● Development of deep soil mixing to stabilise soft organic soils.
● Instrumentation of live geotechnical structures,
● Instrumentation of model and sheet piling,
● Back analysis of behaviour (including stiff clay slopes, flood embankments and bridge foundations),
● Re-use of foundations

Tony is a past member of ISSMGE technical committees on Peat and Organic Soils and Site Characterisation using Geophysical Testing’ and numerous CIRIA project steering groups. He has published extensively in the geotechnical field, produced numerous client reports and presented research findings at many events including publications for the NHBC on Risks in Domestic Basement Construction and Ground Source Heat Pump Systems – Benefits, drivers and barriers in residential developments

Tony is co-author of ‘Geophysics in engineering investigations’ Geological Society Engineering Geology Special Publication 19/CIRIA Report C562 and the Design Guide for Soft Soil Stabilisation published in 2002, and ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls published in 2007.
