DFI, EFFC, London 2010

Welcome from the Chairman of the London 2010 Organising Committee

Welcome from David Sherwood, Chairman of the London 2010 Organising Committee  As Chairman of the Organising Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) and the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) 11th International Conference in May 2010. The conference is a must for anyone interested in geotechnics in urban regeneration.  It will take place in East London at ExCeL, the exhibition and conference centre located close to the main 2012 Olympic Park in Stratford.

Building on the success of past DFI and EFFC conferences, it will follow the format of the Amsterdam Conference in 2006.
Day one will be a series of technical sessions on various urban regeneration topics.  The morning of Day two will be devoted to presentation of particular projects in the vicinity of ExCeL and the afternoon will offer guided visits to these same projects.  The Olympics site will figure amongst these projects.  Finally on Day three there will be a series of panel sessions with leaders from academe and industry promoting discussion on the burning topics of the day.

Urban regeneration today provides geotechnicians with some of their greatest challenges:

  Clean up of pollution on old industrial sites to upgrading Victorian infrastructure;

  Assessing old foundations for re-use to squeezing in new foundations on sites that have already been developed with deep foundations and basements in former times;

  Restoring listed buildings and structures to current day usage to devising foundations for the variety of modern structures that now grace our city scapes

The requirements are multi-faceted, often breaking new ground from an engineering point of view, very demanding and above all, profoundly interesting for all those involved.

The Conference Organising Committee is seeking to establish (with financial support from across the industry internationally) a scheme to assist engineers at the formative stage of their careers to attend.  As the scheme develops, further news will be provided on the website.

Whether you are at the formative stage of your career, at the peak of your engineering prowess or anywhere else in between, there is no better time to start reflecting on an abstract entry for the conference.   Exceptional conferences stem from excellent papers, an impressive delegate list and superb organisation at a stunning venue.  London 2010 aims to achieve all of these and we look forward to providing you with an enjoyable and enlightening experience.
